"All
my life I wanted to be an actor, though I never was in any school
plays or recited a line other
than the Gettysburg Address for my sixth-grade homeroom class."

Family History
Elvis Presley is now a part of American
History. We hope that his memory will help to lead future generations
to regard history and heritage, and to help preserve both as
Elvis would have strived to do.
Elvis occasionally visited the battlefield at Shiloh,
not far from his home. He sometimes took friends and/or family
to see the monuments and to teach them what he had learned about
the battle. Elvis was very much aware that his roots were set
during the War Between States, 1861 ~ 1865. His gggrandfather,
Dunning (Dunnan) Presley, served for the Confederacy in Co.
E of Ham's Regiment, MS cavalry as did many ancestral cousins.

The Kin of Rock and
Roll has
graciously accepted from the Point Lookout Prisoner of War Descendants
Organization two certificates naming Elvis Presley as a post-humous
member on behalf of two cousins, Darling Presley and Horton
Presley, both of whom died at the prison located in MD. in 1864.
Both men died after the Christmas prisoner exchange and kin
would like to know why they were not part of that exchange.
PLPOW is seeking those very answers. For more information, please

Elvis and History |
Elvis
had with him a Civil War musket that was given to him as a gift
from members of Humes High School after he had fitted the color
guard with new outfits. On being asked that since his family
had been here {in America} a long time, were any of his ancestors
in the Civil War or the War of the Revolution, Elvis replied:
"Ah, let me see. On which side, let's
see?" and then
he laughed. Elvis knew the history. He was facinated by the
history of the War Between the States. Elvis was proud of his
heritage.

Civil War Trivia
MEMPHIS HISTORY
AMAZES SOME
It is no surprise that
the city of Memphis, TN was founded by kinfolk.
The name of Winchester is very familiar to the people
of Memphis, and we are sure Elvis recalled it, too. But
we are also sure that Elvis did not know of his connection
to a family that had played such important roles in our
nation's history, the Winchesters.
Drawn from various sources researched in various
historical societes and in the Universities of Memphis
and North Carolina, following is historicl information
regarding the founding of Memphis, Tennessee:
The
city of Memphis, Tennessee was named for Memphis, Egypt.
The city by the river was founded on May 22, 1819 by General
(later President) Andrew Jackson, General James Winchester
and Judge John Overton. Because of its strategic position
at the head of the Delta of the Mississippi River, the
city was named for the ancient capital of Egypt which
was located at the head of the Nile River Delta. |
Kin founder, Barbara Lee Rowe, is also a Winchester,
(via her paternal grand-mother) and she is currently working
on the Winchester family lines for the kin website. Winchesters
did, indeed, marry into the Presley and other allied families.
On May 22, 1819, it was General James Winchester, of the MD
Winchesters and son of William Winchester, along with Andrew
Jackson (the future president) who was born in Monroe, NC, outside
of Charlotte, in the area where many of our original ancestors
lived. After Jackson had moved on and settled in TN, his father
remained at the home in Monroe, and many of his friends were
lifelong neighbors, the Winchesters!
