Part I
The Direct Presley Connection:
Presley/Helms Beginning in NC
You can read about our forefather, Thomas Presley,
and his relations in the history section of the website. Here we will
focus on Thomas Presley marriage and his eldest daughter, Susannah,
5th ggrandmother of Barbara Lee and Gary William Rowe, and all of
those Rowes of our line.
Original lineage
information from the research of Henry Z. Jones. and additional
sourcing by Ed Dunn. Additional notes and updated information are
from The Kin of Rock and Roll and other noted family sources
are in BOLD print.
The Kin of Rock and Roll will add additional
DAR information for some ancestors, as it applies, for the purpose
of descendants who may wish to join this organization. Family members
of Thomas and Susannah Presley and descendants can submit further
lineage charts and photos, if available. Contact elviscousin@comcast.net
NOTES:
*Have we proven that Thomas
Preslar was married to Elizabeth Culpepper? We know that Thomas
Presley did marry a Culpepper. In the US and International Marriage
Records - 1540 to 1900, we have a Thomas Presley of NC married
to ? Culpetter (misspelled). There is no known available Elizabeth
Culpepper who is listed as married to a Thomas other than Thomas
Whitehead. There was no Elizabeth Culpepper in NC born in the
time frame that would have availed her to give birth to a daughter
in 1754. We do know that Thomas Presley, and the Preslar brothers
in general, had a friendship with John and Mary Culpepper of
NC, who was a brother to both Elizabeth and Sarah. These children
were born of Joseph and Martha Culpepper from Norfolk, VA, and
then Anson County, NC. Joseph died in 1745 leaving the youngest
sons to the guardianship of their mother. It is noted that the
daughters of Joseph and Martha are not mentioned, perhaps as
they had been married. Elizabeth is known to have married a
William Wilder. However, Sarah's marriage and husband are still
unproven and uncertain. Keeping with the vicinity, the friendships,
and the age, b. 1729, Sarah seems the more likely candidate
as the Culpepper wife of Thomas Presley. It may appear that
if Sarah had married Thomas, then they may have divorced because
she relocates to GA where she becomes a member of Williams Creek
Baptist Church, Warren Co., Georgia, on 22 Dec 1787. She is
probably buried in that churchyard as in the church records,
she is listed as "dead" in a 21 Sep 1798 listing of
church members which means she would have died within that ten
year period. It is also true that Thomas' good friend (i.e.
the Last Will and Testament of Thomas Preslar) William Crittendon
was married to a Sarah Lee. After William's death, Sarah Lee
Crittendon remarried--Thomas Presley--sometime ca. 1777. William's
son from a prior marriage, John Crittendon, married Naomi Brooks.
The Brooks family land transactions are also prominent with
the Culpeppers as are those of John Edwards of NC whose daughter
married a Culpepper. The Brooks and Edwards connection stems
into the Mansell line.
PART II
The
Helms Family Connection
The Helms family from North
Carolina, from three brothers, George, Tilman, and Jonathan, intermarried
into the Presley line in numerous instances, and these lines can
be traced from NC down to MS and also into Memphis.
The Rowe/Helms line begins with the
husband of Susannah Presley, John Helms, son of George Helmes/Helms
and Mary Margaret Fortenberry. First, many of our family lines
connect to the Presleys through intermarriage as well. Here, the
Fortenberrys of NC, SC, and points down to MS, dec-cendants of
Henry, Isaac, and Jacob Faukenburg, had undergone the name change

to Fortenberry during the American Revolution
when, it is said, that Henry and sons fled NC to SC because of
their loyalist sympathies. The first instance of relation through
intermarriage into the Mansell/Smith line is with Lillian Smith,
eldest sister of Gladys Smith Presley, whose second husband was
a Fortenberry.
Susannah and John Helms had two sons: Joel and John, Jr. The Rowe
family descends from Joel Helms and his first wife, Sarah (Sary)
Hargett, 4th ggrandparents of Barbara Lee and Gary Rowe. The Presley
family largely intermarried into the Hargett line through Thomas
Presley's son, Richard, but there were others in our family lines
who intermarried into the Hargett line.
Joel Helms and Sarah had several children, the eldest son being
Henderson Helms, the 3rd ggrandfather of Barbara Lee and Gary
Rowe.
Henderson Helms married Abigail Crowell. The Crowell story is
facinating in itself, and though we don't immediately tie into
the Presleys, that I know of yet, from the Crowell line, a cousin
to us is Rodney Crowell, former son-in-law of the late Johnny
Cash. More interesting is that our ancestor, Henry Crowell, owned
the plantation on the Tar River in South Carolina where General
Cornwallis made his headquarters during the American Revolution
pertinent to the battles in that area including Kings Mountain.
From Henderson and Abigail, we go down to Emily Jessie Helms,
eldest daughter of Henderson, and her husband, Samuel Augusta
Winchester. The Winchester story of itself is quite interesting,
and the lines of the Winchester family run very deep back to England.
But how do the Winchesters tie in with the Presleys? Cousins all.
Elvis would have been so intrigued had he known a cousin was Oliver
Winchester, founder of the famed Winchester Rifle, which Elvis
was proud of owning. Several Winchester family members married
into the Presley line including Joel Winchester who married Huldah
Presley, a daughter of Richard. The Winchester line stems into
the Presley/Helms/Keziah lines. And let us not forget that General
James Winchester, a Maryland cousin, was one of three men who
founded Memphis, TN! Samuel Winchester's ggrandfather was one
of two men who founded the town of Monroe, NC, where was borned
and raised, President Andrew Jackson, President James K. Polk,
and the late Senator, Jesse Helms. Our ancestor, William Douglas
Winchester, was the largest landowner and highest tax payer in
his district in NC nearby the Pee Dee River. The Winchester's
started in Anson County, NC, alongside the Presley family. Daniel
Winchester, our 6th ggrand uncle, and Charles Presley became friends
and served together during the American Revolution, both relocating
permanently to Tennessee.
