The spirit
of Elvis exists at Graceland®. The living room and music
room, the way Elvis liked it. At one point his favorite color
was heliotope, but always a favorite was the color "blue."
Blue represented healing and peace to Elvis, and the spirit
of serenity was just a step inside where Elvis often sat quietly
playing the piano and glancing over at the very first television
set the Presleys had ever owned, bought for his mother and father
by their newly successful son.
The alcove between the living room and music room is where the
caskets of both Gladys and Elvis presided during their respective
wakes. Gladys lay in repose several days longer than expected
as Elvis was having a difficult time letting her go. He would
not allow anyone to take his mother away. This was stated by
family friend, Cliff Greaves. When they finally buried Gladys,
Elvis had to be restrained. Above is the sympathy card sent
out by the Presley family for the services of Elvis.
The inspiration for the beautiful stained-glass peacocks to
either side of the doorway came from Elvis' co-star, Suzanne
Leigh, who once told Elvis that the Queen had peacocks in her
midst for protection. Elvis admired the Queen, and was long
facinated by the history of England. Thus, he had these beautiful
birds designed for the entrance to his living room. Elvis had
wanted to see England, to go there and possibly perform for
his fans. This never materialized until Elvis was the first
entertainer ever to perform world-wide via satellite.

Elvis studied the art of Karate at the studios
of Kang Rhee, who signed this actual photograph of Elvis' taken
at the studio. Elvis was par excellence and eventually did earn
his black belt degree. He was proud of his ability but also
studied the art to further his self-discipline which also aided
in spiritual ventures. Elvis brought some of the "Memphis
Mafia" in with him as part of the disciplinary tactics
for the "TCB " ideals. Unfortunately, Mrs. Presley
also decided to take up the art and from her sessions with Mike
Stone evolved to a situation that perpetrated Elvis' mistrust
of her and was, no doubt, the eventual beginning that lead to
the break-up of their marriage. As for Kang Rhee, Elvis' instructor,
Elvis' held much respect for this kind and genuine teacher and
friend. Elvis was so grateful to Kang, as a matter of fact,
that he surprised him after one session with a brand new car.
Kang never forget Elvis' generosity or that he was a happy-go-lucky,
witty, and charming soul. Some of Elvis' happiest moments were
spent at the Kang Rhee studios.

Christmas
at Graceland® was Elvis' favorite season.
Here is the white tree with red ornaments used by Elvis
and family, and usually it stood closer into the corner and
presents filled the room as did Lisa Marie's toys. Below is
the living room showing the 15 foot couch, and below that
is the bedroom used by Gladys and Vernon, just as it was left
after Glady's death. In it stands the original family tree.
