Elvis Presley was despairing at a time when the world was closing in on him. He missed his mama always, and more recently a divorce from Priscilla and not having his little "Yessa" around him all the time, began to weigh heavily on Elvis' mind. He was a man truly alone in a crowd, a void in this being that was never filled, nor would it be, after he had lost his beloved mama so many years earlier. The people around him took from him and drained his physical being. A friend was hard to come by. Most were acquaintances. One night in Las Vegas, in the solitude of his room, Elvis penned a letter to God, a beautiful poem that stemmed from his soul. He cried as he asked God to help him for he knew the pressures had become excessive and that he could not exist wholly while being pulled in every direction. That letter wound up with a friend, Wayne Newton, who turned it into the beautiful song you will here called "The Letter." The original letter still hangs in Wayne Newton's Las Vegas home, and it still brings a tear to his eyes when he passes by and views it. The world lost a beautiful soul because of the selfishness and greed of some. Too many had taken from him, enforced themselves upon him, demanded of him, and wanted to destroy him. Elvis never lost control. The Lord was on his side. The Lord had somehow answered Elvis' prayer that night and led him away; within the next three months he was gone. There are those who love him and have felt his pain and sadness, those who respect him and his memory. There are those, however, who will not stop obsessing to find the man once known as Elvis Presley, believing that he lives still. If Elvis was alive, do you not think that he deserves peace and happiness away from the life that nearly destroyed him? But, Elvis Presley is gone. He is no longer with us so we ask that those obsessed with finding him, drop it and allow his memory to stay gold. Get on with your lives and remember the fond memories of a man who brought the world happiness and continues to do so. God Bless you, Elvis. We will love you and remember you always. |
